Help / Checkout and payments

Set up card payments, a card reader, sales tax and tip presets

Connect payouts, register a Stripe smart reader, and set sales tax and the tip buttons shown at checkout.

Who can do this: The owner or a manager. Only the owner connects payouts.

Steps

  1. Open Business settings and choose Payments.
  2. Card payments says whether the shop can take cards. If not, press Connect payouts (or Continue payout setup) to go to Stripe.
  3. Card readers: on the Stripe smart reader, swipe right from the left edge, open Settings, choose Generate pairing code, and note the three words.
  4. Type them in Registration code, give the reader a Name such as Front desk, and press Register reader.
  5. Refresh status re-reads each reader; Remove takes one off.
  6. Tax and tips: set Sales tax (%) and Tip presets (%) (one to six whole percents, separated by commas), then press Save.

What you will see

  • "Payment settings saved." Tax applies to every taxable line at checkout.
  • The reader shows the first three tip presets, and the customer picks the tip on the reader.
  • If you use Square, the page opens with a Card processor choice of Stripe or Square. With Square, checkout sends cards to your Square Terminal.

Common problems

"Add the shop's street address, city and postal code to the business profile first -- Stripe files every reader under an address."
Fill them in under Business settings > Business profile.
"Stripe did not recognise that code. Check the reader's screen and try again."
Generate a new pairing code and retype the three words.
"Tax is a percent from 0 to 100, at most two decimals."
Enter a valid percent.
"Tip presets are one to six whole percents, separated by commas."
For example 15, 20, 25.
"Square is not configured on this server."
The Square option is not available on this installation.
"The owner connects payouts."
Ask the owner to connect payouts.
